ELGIN - An election will no longer be needed this upcoming April to fill the Elgin City Council Member Ward 2 seat.
After two of Elgin's citizens withdrew their declarations of candidacy for Ward 2 with the Comanche County Election Board, Jana Barker remained as the only qualified candidate that filed. Running unopposed, she automatically takes the position for a four-year term.
Appointed by Mayor Larry Thoma several months ago to temporarily represent the people in Ward 2 after previous council member Donna Shadoan stepped down due to health concerns, Jana said she's already had a small taste of of what the position will be like.
"The main thing is Elgin is growing so fast and a lot of people may not know what needs to be done. I have a lot of experience in city government," said Jana. "I think I can do good for the people and the city."
