COMANCHE COUNTY — A Sterling resident and an additional, unidentified passenger died Saturday, Nov. 14 in a collision with another vehicle on State Highway 17, east of Sterling.
An Oklahoma Highway Patrol report indicates the collision occurred around 6:38 p.m. Saturday on S.H. 17 at N.E. 225th Street, approximately 2 miles east of Sterling. According to the OHP report, Troopers say Kelly L. Hale, 61, of Sterling, was traveling southbound on N.E. 225th Street when the 2000 Dodge Ram she was driving failed to yield at a stop sign and was subsequently struck by a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Upon impact, the Dodge departed the roadway to the left before overturning and coming to rest upside down, according to the report.
Troopers report Hale and an unidentified passenger in the truck died at the scene of the collision.
The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Christopher F. Wilmeth, 47, of Fletcher, was flown by AirEvac to the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he was admitted in critical condition with head, legs and trunk internal and external injuries. Passenger, Shannon R. Wilmeth, 45, of Fletcher, was taken by Kirks EMS to Comanche County Memorial Hospital.
Troopers report the cause of the collision and the condition of both drivers at the time of the collision remain under investigation.
The Comanche County Sheriff’s Office, Sterling police and fire departments and Kirks and Apache EMS assisted Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Troop G and Traffic Homicide Unit with this investigation.
