Fourth of July is a time for friends and family to get together to celebrate our nation's nationhood. It is also the time of year that this writer likes to start looking into the future.
The start of high school football is about a month away as limited practices can start on Aug. 9. Full practice can start on Aug. 13 with “zero” week starting on Aug. 26.
To get the ball rolling, high School softball and volleyball can start their seasons on Aug. 9. I also will not look at the Major League baseball standings until after the Fourth of July. Usually, the standings will move around quite a bit in the first part of the season but seem to settle down in the second half.
I have a firm belief that if a team is more than 10 games out at the All Star break, which falls around the fourth of July, they don’t have a chance to come back in the standings and win their division.
Now, I know this is not a foolproof theory that I go by as the 1951 San Francis- co Giants, who trailed the Brooklyn Dodgers by 13.5 games on Aug. 11, 1951, came all the way back.
The Giants and Dodgers ended up tied at the end of regular season and had to play a three game playoff to decide who would play the New York Yankees in the World Series.
The playoff went to three games and that is where Bobby Thomson hit a walk-off home run to win the game.
Okay, there is a little history lesson and some calendar peeking. Either way, “Let’s play ball”.
As always, stay safe and healthy.
