FLETCHER - Funeral service for Roy “Peachy” Thomas, 91, of Fletcher, was held Friday, March 15, 2019, at First Baptist Church in Fletcher with Pastor Rodney Campbell officiating. Burial followed at Fletcher Cemetery under the direction of Fletcher Funeral Home.
Peachy passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019, in Grants Pass, Ore., where he lived with Tina and Brian.
Roy Rex “Peachy” Thomas was born on Dec. 4, 1927, north of Sterling, to Brownie and Juanita (Wilson) Thomas. Peachy was the next to the oldest of nine kids. Peachy and the family moved northwest of Fletcher on an Indian lease. Brownie and Juanita bought the farm across the road from the lease in 1939. He attended Midway and Fletcher Schools.
Peachy married Lauretta Sanders in Rockwall, Texas, on May 6, 1946. The two were married for 72 years, 7 months and 22 days upon Lauretta’s death on Jan. 1, 2019. Peachy and Lauretta had one son, Roy Lynn, and one daughter, LaRae Thomas Whitfield. They raised two of the four grandkids, Roy “Pete” Thomas and Tina Thomas Garncarz. Peachy and Lauretta had two other grandkids: Dawn and Diana Whitfield; 17 great-grandkids; and 18 great-great-grandkids.
Peachy farmed with his Daddy until 1975 when Peachy and Lauretta bought the “Home Place” from his parents. Peachy and Lauretta farmed the Ice Place, West Place and Indian Lease.
In 1955, he and Lauretta bought the Fletcher Grocery Store and sold it in 1965. Peachy and Lauretta bought the Locker Plant in 1965 and sold it to Gary Hutson in 1975.
They farmed the Home Place and a second farm they bought in 1980 until 2010 when the Home Place was handed down to Diana and Josh Drown. The second farm was handed down to Bruce Whitfield in 2010. Peachy also was a retired volunteer fireman and volunteer ambulance driver. Peachy loved his family, friends, farming, camping and helping others.
He is survived by a sister, Ann Thomas; three brothers: Buddy, Tony and Phil Thomas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by wife, Lauretta Thomas; a daughter, LaRae Whitfield; granddaughter, Dawn Whitfield; his parents: Brownie and Juanita Thomas; three sisters: Joy Fay Crumpton, Barbara Crabree and Betty Ham; and a brother, Bill Thomas.
