ELGIN - November 11 was designated by congress as Veterans Day in 1954. However, before it was Veteran’s Day, November 11 was known as Armistice Day, which commemorated the official end of World War I in 1918. Major hostilities were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
It is now a U.S. Federal holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors all who served in the United States Armed Forces.
