After one extra day, the calendar has finally and officially flipped to March. As I drove around this weekend and enjoyed the weather, I commented to my wife that what upsets me is that the weather will not hold and it will get cold again. But just before Spring arrives on March 19, we will get to go through another selection Sunday. The NCAA will announce their top 64 teams that will battle for the National Championship in basketball.

Reading through some predictions, it looked, at the time, that the Big XII was in line to have two number one seeds. We will have to wait and see if the Texas Christian upset of the Baylor men this weekend knocks Baylor from a number one to a number two seed. March also brings State Championship runs to basketball and wrestling. Congratulations to Elgin’s boys, as they survived the rugged trip through the Consolation bracket and earned a trip to the Area Tournament. Reaching this time of year in basketball, I wonder if there is really anything of an upset anymore. I know Kingfisher boys have ran through the season undefeated and winning most games handily, while going 25-0.

Kingfisher will face Bethany in the Area Tournament, and Bethany will be the underdog. Bethany is 20-5 on the season with three of their losses coming in December. One loss that does stand out is a loss to Kingfisher back in early February, with Kingfisher winning by 12 points. So, back to my point. If Bethany was able to beat Kingfisher, everyone would want to talk about how big of an upset it was. My feeling is there are no bad teams left at this team of year. A bounce of the ball here or there and things will look a whole lot different.

Also, on tap for March is that all the Spring sports kicked off their seasons as of March 2. Baseball, golf, soccer, tennis and track are now open for business leading up to all their State Finals that will come sooner than expected in May. So, polish up the golf clubs, oil up the baseball mitts and let's get ready for some Spring weather. Also, get those pencils sharpened so we can follow along as our brackets get busted again this year. Ahhhh, March!
