It has already been quite an unusual beginning for sports for 2021. Between the pandemic and now Punxsutawney Phil’ prediction of six more weeks of winter coming through, sports schedules have taken a beating. All of the Wrestling Regional Tournaments that were scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13 were moved to Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20. Now we are waiting for the second round of the storm to see if these dates will still be good to go. The smaller classes were able to get their District Basketball Tournaments in but did have to adjust the schedules because of the weather.

Elgin basketball teams lost their last regular season game against Tuttle due to road conditions and extreme wind chill temperatures. There may not be many hockey fans in southwest Oklahoma but the pandemic has been playing havoc with the hockey season.  The DeSilver family is all set to pack up the car and make a trip to the Fort Worth, Texas, area this coming Saturday for a race at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. We are on hold for those plans as the track decides if they are going to be able to get the race in.

I read somewhere that a certain newspaper editor had made apologies to Punxsutawney Phil for doubting his weather forecasting skills. Let’s hope Phil is listening!

As always, stay safe and healthy.
