ELGIN – With National Friends Week and Elgin’s own Friends preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary on the horizon, Friends of the Elgin Community Library have two reasons to celebrate.

Member Jeanne Cook briefly outlined the Friends’ mission and goals to the Elgin Chamber of Commerce and Elgin City Council recently. During the city council meeting, Mayor JJ Francais signed a proclamation in recognition of the organization’s support of the local library. Elgin Community Library provides educational and entertainment resources to patrons living in Elgin, Fletcher and Sterling.

Patrons who visit the library during Friends Week are eligible to win prizes from local businesses, including Haciendas Las Margaritas Bar and Grill, Pizza Corral and Pink Elephant Coffee and Snow Cones.

In addition, the Friends will give away free books at Williams Grocery Store Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Currently there are about 90 personal and business memberships with the Friends of ECL.

Annual membership dues are individual, $10; family, $20; business, $50; and lifetime $100. Friends of ECL meet quarterly in January, April, July, and October. The group will next meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 19 at Elgin Community Library, 108 Thoma Drive.
