Graveside service for James Michael Churchwell, 68, of Lubbock, Texas, was held Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at the Fort Sill National Cemetery under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home.

Mr. Churchwell passed away on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, in Lubbock, Texas.

James Michael Churchwell was born May 5, 1950, in Altus to Billy and Bobbie (Clark) Churchwell. He grew up in Fletcher where he graduated high school in 1968.

Mike served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. During his service, Mike was awarded the Bronze Star as well as the Silver Star. After being honorably discharged in 1971, he went to work for Halliburton for 14 years.

Mike owned and operated Churchwell’s APCO for three years and then drove a truck until retiring in 2010. He was a member of the Fletcher Christian Church from 1990 until 2018 when he was baptized in the Cowboy Church in Lubbock, Texas.

Mike enjoyed boats and water skiing, tinkering on vehicles, and rebuilding his truck.

He is survived by a son, Charles Churchwell and his wife Bianca, of Springdale, Ark.; three daughters: Abby Western and her husband Brad, of Lubbock, Texas; Heather Churchwell, of Sterling; and Whitney Turpin and her husband Josh, of Mustang; two brothers: Mark Churchwell and his wife Donna, of Texas; and Steve Shiflett and his wife Pam, of Fletcher; three sisters: Mary Miller and her husband Jerry, of Oklahoma City; Martha Brown, of Seattle, Wash.; and Susan Blackburn and her husband Keith, of Fletcher; and nine grandchildren: Alexis Western, Jordan Wester, Hayden Lorentz, Cael Lorentz, Ty Lorentz, Madelyn Turpin, Makenzie Witt, Damian Mancillas and Allie Churchwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Billy and Bobbie Churchwell.
