ELGIN - A kaleidoscope of color amid a dome of crunchy ice, snow cones have been a popular treat used to “beat the heat” for the last 100 years.
According to various online sources, snow cones were first introduced at the State Fair of Texas in 1919, by inventor Samuel Bert. The following year, Bert patented his first ice crushing machine and by the 1950’s, he was reportedly selling close to a million snow cones a year at the fair.
