ELGIN - A wide array of local events will be hosted throughout the months of February and March, keeping area businesses and community members engaged.
Elgin Chamber of Commerce members who attended the regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11, were briefed on the details of each upcoming occasion. From Business Brews and unique classes being offered, to various fundraisers and functions to attend, there are opportunities and activities for everyone to participate in.
President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Oklahoma, Lauren Ellis, voiced a plea urging chamber members to volunteer for the organization. Lauren said a group of volunteers is desperately needed to review the annual grant applications submitted by the 17 non-profit organizations supported by the United Way of Southwest Oklahoma. According to Lauren being involved in the review process can be "rewarding" and volunteers get a first-hand experience with seeing exactly where, and how, grant money is being spent in our areas. "It really is an awesome way to see the whole network working together to benefit our communities," said Lauren. Volunteers will work in panels with someone already experienced in the process, conduct site visits and review applications to see how well each organization is spending their money so that the United Way can report back to their donors, said Lauren. Even if chamber members aren't interested in volunteering themselves, Lauren encourages everyone to spread the word, hoping others will step forward to fill the need.
